Ramadan is set to begin on Februarty 28 or March 1, depending on the observance of the moon.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri calendar, is one of the most sacred times for Muslim communities. It marks the arrival of the first verses of the Holy Quran.
During the entire month of Ramadan, many will take the time to intentionally (re)connect to their faith by showing intense spiritual discipline. This includes deep contemplation of one's relationship with Allah (SWT), salah (prayer), zakaat (acts of generosity), and study of the Qur'an.
Though not everyone, many will participate in sawm (fasting) during this time. The fast starts at dawn with suhoor (meal eaten before dawn) and Fajr (dawn prayer) and is broken at sunset each day with Maghrib (sunset prayer) and Iftar (breaking-fast meal).
How can we support one another during Ramadan?
CONNECT with 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂ's Multi-faith Services to meet with a Spiritual Support Team Member or participate in cultural events at the International Centre
GREET community members by saying "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem"
MAKE A PLAN with students, faculty and staff who may need to have alternative deadlines, take additional breaks to pray, abstain from intense physical activities, pause their work to rest or eat a snack during an evening class/ meeting
CHECK IN with Muslim neighbours on whether they need additional support and how best to support them
BE AN ADVOCATE with Muslims for fair, dignified and supportive care throughout our community.
Some reflections for us all to share in as we celebrate with our neighbours:
How do you set your intentions for the day, week, month, and year?
How have you shared your energy, time, skills and resources with the community around you?
In what ways do you hold yourself accountable for your attitudes, words, and actions?
What are your goals for the year?
What do you need to have/ do to make them become a reality?
