Aphasia Book Club

Ìý

This is a book club for people with mild aphasia and mild to moderate difficulty speaking.Ìý

We read one book per semester, approximately 35-40 pages per week.Ìý

The students create a story map for the reading each week. It includes the time period, setting, major and minor characters, and brief summary of main events. There are 14-15 multiple-choice questions andÌýaround 4-6Ìýdiscussion questions.Ìý Those materials are sent out 5-6 days before the meeting and then reviewed and discussed at the meeting.

There is also an opportunity at the beginning of each meeting for the participants to share any updates from the previous week that they might want to talk about. Sometimes this includes activities that they did, family news, or discussion about events in the news.Ìý

Participants need to be able to read (or listen to an audiobook) and understand 35-40 pages of a book per week. They should be able to participate in the discussions, but may have some difficulty speaking. We can provide some communication support.Ìý

We meet on Zoom, so potential participants need to have some sort of technology and internet access to join a Zoom a call.

New potential participants will complete an assessment with the supervisor and students. The assessment includes reading paragraphs and answering questions. We will also ask questions about how the person feels about reading and what types of reading they do.Ìý

Meetings are once per week for 1.5 hours for 7-8 sessions per term in fall, winter, and spring.Ìý

For winter 2025, meetings are on Mondays,Ìý12:30-2pm,Ìýfrom Jan. 27 to Mar. 24 (no meetingÌýon February 17Ìý-Ìýpublic holiday).ÌýÌý

The spring 2025 session will be on Fridays, April 25-June 6, 1:00 - 2:30 pm
